Growing up, I considered discernment a “choosing”. This or that. Should I pursue sports medicine or archeology? Should I get married or pursue a consecrated life?

But with each year added to my life, I am more certain that discernment is far less ultimate than that. It’s more acute - far more simple. 

It’s a game of self-knowledge, pushing past the outer rinds of our self (as Teresa says), to know the core of who we are. It’s knowing our heart and our true desires (the ones which have consistently remained well beyond periods of desolation and aridity). And knowing yourself, your heart, being able to know when something is not as it should be. Knowing when something is off. 

Discernment is never a point of arrival, but rather, a series of departures. 

New paths ever being woven in our lives. 

Adventure.
