Worst Writing Advice

One of the worst pieces of advice I've heard about learning to write: copy another writer.

Here's why it's bad advice: you're not growing, and you've bound yourself in the shadow of someone else, that is not you. You've blocked yourself from every bit of possibility.

My take:
Read. Read lots of books, articles, poems.
Just read anything.
Learn what you like and don't like. Like dating.

Then write.
Just write, don't think.
It’s organic.

This is how you curate your own style of writing. Your own way of being-in-the-world as Heidegger would say.

From there, you will grow, and evolve your style, but it'll be your style.

Some will like it, others won't. But that piece? That is periphery.

P.S. #Gin or #Scotch helps too.
