The man walked passed me

quirk·y
/ˈkwərkē/ adjective
characterized by peculiar or unexpected traits.

Friday, stood along the side.

There was a couple, early to mid 30s. To my urban, city-heavy being, they blended right in, trailer park folk. But I noticed them. Both dressed like the 90s, unsure if that was intentional.

The man walked passed me, and I saw his worn out slide on shoes, his demin that were just a little too short to be pants, but too long to be cropped. He went to grab another cold one. When he returned to his woman, who was equally distinctive, they had a look. It was a look of understanding, a gentle care. Not once did I see their attention fixed on something other than the performance in front of them or each other.

That, a rare sight in the city. A couple sitting across a table, both with their eyes glued on their phones. The woman making her date take “candid” pictures of her tasting her creme brûlée. Dressed exceptionally well, attractive, model-like even. But they have no things to talk about. No mutual interests. That is the biggest tragedy.

Those characterized by peculiar or unexpected traits are my teachers, and my challengers.
