Estranged from our Hearts

The need to be in and be seen.

We change the way we speak,
the way we dress,
the way we see others,
the way we treat others,
the way we experience the world,
And ultimately, we change our heart.

Our basic human need is to be seen and be included, but in trying so hard (I may even say ‘too hard’) to be seen and let in, we disintegrate into what Heidegger may call “the they”, dasein.

At the expense of our individuality, our intrinsic dignity and unrepeatable-ness, for a subtle moment, we experience reprieve. But sure as it comes, it goes. Goes, because we willingly killed our individuality and have taken up the form of what is not us. We become, faded stamps of ‘the they’, worn, and faded.

And in turn, our identity is conflated to ‘the they’. We have not taken any effort to know ourselves.

We don’t know how we actually speak,
How we actually dress,
How we actually see others,
How we actually treat others,
How we actually experience the world,
And ultimately, are estranged from our hearts.

All for what?

From the need to be accepted,
From the desire of being preferred to others,
From the desire of being approved,
Deliver us.
